Mermaid Cave on Oahu

One of the most guarded secrets on the island of Oahu is the Mermaid Cave.  Believe what you will, but do a Google search and you’ll find abstract directions unlike Diamond Head, Koko Crater or other popular destinations.

If you do go, you’ll also realize for good reason why it shouldn’t be a main tourist attraction.

First, there’s not a lot of space for people.  Second, there’s only two times a day it’s safe to go and that’s during low tide.  Third, not everyone can do it.  It requires average upper body strength to get into the hole and get back out of it.  If you have a friend that let’s you climb on their back, great but otherwise be careful because the rocks are sharp and unforgiving.

Here’s a map of the location:

Nanakuli Beach Park should be what’s entered into your GPS, however park in the parking lot off Laumania Ave, walk past the showers and go left.  You’ll see a couple of holes in the ground after a while and take the one in that’s closest to shore.  After that, grab some great pics and enjoy!
